Caring for animalsThe use of animals as food for humans imposes a great responsibility on all parties in the production chain. VION Food Group attaches great importance to the proper care of animals and takes into account the public's concerns about this. VION Food Group takes its responsibility seriously and works closely with other parties in the production chain in the area of animal welfare.Animal health A sound and safe product begins, as does animal welfare, with healthy livestock. VION Food Group promotes measures that may improve animal health. VION Food Group is committed to the ethically responsible treatment of animals, based on scientifically underpinned guidelines. This is also expected of the livestock farmers, dealers and hauliers who supply animals to VION. VION Food Group takes all necessary measures to prevent the spread of animal diseases. Animal Welfare Animal welfare is an issue that receives special attention within VION Food Group. VION Food Group does not only base its activities on laws and regulations at a European level. In response to signals from the market, VION Food Group also develops innovation programmes in this field. A successful example is the 'Good Farming Welfare' concept. This concept is based on the demand from the UK retail market. This form of pig farming is characterised by a number of welfare requirements beyond those required by legislation, the additional cost of which is paid for by the market. VION Food Group conducts an active policy to develop technologies and aids, not only within its own operations, that contribute to further improvement in animal welfare. This is founded on scientific research. In this regard VION Food Group takes the view that the strengthening of statutory animal welfare requirements must be embedded at a European level in order thus to ensure a balanced competitive position. Within VION Food Group procedures and guidelines are in force for employees handling livestock. These employees have undergone special animal welfare training. The same applies also to the hauliers who deliver the animals. In order to be able to supply to British supermarkets, abattoir staff have had special training to qualify as Animal Welfare Officers. This ensures that the handling of the animals during transportation and after arrival at the abattoir takes place in an animal-friendly way. |
