VION Food Group has included sustainability as one of the essential pillars of its strategy. This manifests itself in all sorts of programmes and projects. VION Food Group invests in the search for methods to control, reduce and/or replace negative processes and effects.

Environmental Protection
VION Food Group wishes to meet the current needs and desires of consumers with products of the highest quality, without at the same time losing sight of future generations. Concern for the environment plays an important role in our sustainability strategy. Optimisation of transport movements, use of recyclable industrial packaging and various energy saving projects are examples of our active environmental policy.
VION Food Group combines, as far as possible, all these interests. Those of our employees, our workplace, the environment and our business interests.
Together with external parties we seek constantly to implement the best possible solutions. We closely monitor legislation and keep up with state-of-the-art technology. VION Food Group weighs up the sustainability of business, social and environmental aspects when determining its strategy and policy.

Energy and water saving
Programmes have been introduced in the VION divisions to reduce CO2 emissions.
Internal monitoring systems aim to optimise energy consumption in the production sites.
The program aimed at reducing water consumption at the sites is another successful initiative. By-products from VION's biological water treatment plants are bio-degradable. They are used centrally to generate green electricity in biogas facilities.
Rendac and Ecoson also discharge treated water to surface water and are thus not only consumers but also suppliers of water.

Sustainable applications
The business operations of Sonac are another example of sustainability. Sonac is continuously innovating in order to find valuable uses for animal slaughter by-products. The company produces, for example, valuable proteins, fats and minerals which are used among other things in the production of food, medicines and animal feed.

A sustainable balance between human beings, society, environment and economy can also be seen in Rendac. Rendac's end-products are used for energy generation. The energy is put directly to use in their own production process and reduces gas consumption.
Rendac's end-products are also used as fuel for coal-fired power stations and cement kilns The amount of energy supplied annually by Rendac is sufficient to power three million 12W low energy light bulbs for one year.

Ecoson
In the Ecoson business unit, VION Food Group is investing in the supply of renewable energy. Using ultramodern technology, Ecoson generates energy from animal fats produced by Sonac. Ecoson is a plant that generates biogas and biodiesel. The biodiesel will be used, among other things, as fuel for lorries.
