InnovationInnovation is of vital importance for VION Food Group. Achieving an innovative environment is one of our strategic corporate goals. These ambitions are embedded in the organisation by means of the appointment of a Chief Strategic Officer and the development of policy for the short and long term.VION Food Group has two essential innovation paths. Product innovation concerns aspects such as food and health, organic ingredients and functionality, safety and shelf-life. Innovation in chain and process relates are linked to primary production, environmental issues, animal welfare and production processes within VION Food Group. An example of innovation in the chain is Farmingnet, the information system for pig farmers. This system is unique worldwide. It offers management information to pig farmers to optimise quality and operational processes in pig farms. Innovation within VION Food Group is more than new products, automated processes, new technologies or sophisticated laboratories. Innovation is also about picking up on market trends and opportunities. In some situations the innovation programmes are standalone. In other cases they are complementary and can reinforce each other. The innovation goal for the short and medium term is to further develop programmes within the business units. In close cooperation with CROs (contract research organisations), projects are implemented which may result in benefits for various product groups. For the long term, VION Food Group is working to set up new centres of excellence within a number of business units. VION Food Group has been working with other groups in and around the Dutch pork industry to take the initiative for “Sustainable change in the pork industry”. The agenda includes topics such as rural change, environment, animal welfare, product innovation and the economy, which will together be the subject of further work. VION Food Group works closely with university centres and specialist research institutes, such as the Bundesanstalt für Fleischforschung (Germany), Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (Germany), Royal Veterinary and Agriculture University (UK) and the Anton Jurgens Instituut (NL). The Chief Strategic Officer of VION Food Group plays an executive role in the prominent Dutch organisation, the Top Institute Food and Nutrition.
